At Tang Hall, let’s do our best to live sustainably.

MIT provides different receptacles for Single Stream Recycling, Food Waste, and Trash. There are also receptacles for plastic bags/film, batteries, light bulbs, and small electronics. Please use the different receptacles appropriately to reduce our impact on the environment.

There are also slack channels, mailing lists, and events dedicated to reusing items for free or for sale.  Please see the links below to sign up.

Single Stream Recycling

Recycling bins are located outside the back door.

Single Stream recycling allows clean plastics, paper, cardboard, glass, aluminum, and metal cans to be recycled together.

Please

  • wash or rinse empty food containers to avoid contamination
  • break down boxes (so they fold flat) to save space
  • do not include plastic bags or film as they may jam the machines. There is a separate receptacle for plastic bags.

For more information on recycling, see https://web.mit.edu/facilities/environmental/reuse.html#ss.

Food Waste

Food Waste at MIT is collected and converted into energy (see video). To request a free countertop food waste bin, please contact tang-sustainability@mit.edu, subject to availability. Bins are the property of the Tang Hall Residents Association and should be returned when departing Tang Hall. Food waste guidelines are affixed to the bins.

Trash Disposal

Each floor has a trash chute near the stairwell by the “E” and “F” apartment doors.

Please

  • securely tie bags of trash before putting them in the chute, leave the area clean, and close the chute hatch when done.
  • do not put large or expanding items (e.g., cardboard boxes) down the chute. Boxes can be broken down and recycled while other large items can be put on the loading dock outside the back door.
  • file a maintenance request if there is something wrong with the chute or chute hatch.

Specialized Disposal

Specialized disposal bins are provided in the lobby for plastic bags/films, batteries, light bulbs, and small electronics. These items must be handled differently, so please separate them.
